Laser hair removal is one of the most reliable treatments in aesthetics and one of the most oversold. The technology works. What varies is whether the right device was chosen for the person in the chair, and whether anyone explained what the result would actually look like.

The mechanism is simple enough to be worth understanding, because almost every practical question follows from it.

How it works, and why that dictates everything else

The laser emits light at a wavelength absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair. That light converts to heat in the shaft, travels down to the follicle, and damages the structure that produces hair. The surrounding skin is meant to absorb comparatively little of it.

Two consequences follow, and they explain most of what people find confusing.

It needs contrast between hair and skin. The treatment relies on the hair holding more pigment than the skin around it. Dark hair on lighter skin is the easiest case. As skin gets darker, the margin narrows and the device has to change.

It only works on hair that is actively growing. Follicles cycle through growth, transition and rest, and only those in the growth phase are connected to the structures the laser needs to reach. At any given moment only a share of your hair qualifies, which is precisely why one session cannot finish the job and why the sessions are spaced.

The single most useful thing to know. The number of sessions is set by hair biology, not by the clinic. Anyone offering to complete a course in two visits is either misunderstanding the cycle or counting on you not to.

The lasers, and why the choice is the whole decision

Alexandrite (755nm). Shorter wavelength, strongly absorbed by melanin, fast over large areas. Excellent on lighter skin with dark hair. Its strength is also its limitation, since that same avid absorption becomes a liability as skin tone darkens.

Diode (around 800 to 810nm). The general-purpose workhorse. Effective across a broad range of skin types and comfortable over large areas such as legs and backs.

Nd:YAG (1064nm). Longer wavelength, less absorbed by surface pigment, penetrates deeper. This is the device generally chosen for darker skin, because it can reach the follicle without depositing as much energy in the epidermis on the way. It tends to be felt more than the others.

A practice that only owns one device will recommend that device to everyone. That is worth knowing before you book, because on darker skin the wrong wavelength is not merely less effective, it carries meaningfully more risk of burns and of pigment change afterwards. Asking which laser will be used, and why that one for your skin, is a completely reasonable question and the answer should be specific to you.

Who it suits well

Where the honest limits are

Light hair. Blonde, red, grey and white hair lack the pigment the laser needs. Results are unpredictable and often poor, and no number of extra sessions changes the physics. This is the most common reason for a disappointing course, and it is knowable in advance.

Fine, downy hair. Less pigment and a smaller target. Responds less predictably than coarse hair even when dark.

Hormonally driven growth. Where an underlying hormonal pattern is driving hair growth, follicles that were dormant can activate later. That is not a failed treatment, it is new growth from follicles that were never treated, and it is worth understanding at the outset so a maintenance session does not feel like a setback. Anyone in that situation is best served discussing the underlying picture with their physician alongside any cosmetic treatment.

Recent sun exposure or a tan. Raises melanin in the skin and narrows the contrast the treatment depends on. Most practices will postpone rather than proceed, and that is a good sign rather than an inconvenience.

What a course actually looks like

Expect six to eight sessions to begin with, spaced roughly four to eight weeks apart depending on the area, since growth cycles differ between the face and the legs. Facial areas usually need shorter intervals and more sessions.

The change is gradual and cumulative. Hair regrowing between early sessions typically comes back finer and sparser rather than disappearing outright, and it is that progressive thinning, rather than a single dramatic result, that indicates the course is working.

Sessions themselves are quick. Most people describe a snapping sensation with warmth, sharper over bone and on sensitive areas. Redness and slight swelling around individual follicles for a few hours to a day or two is the usual course, and most people carry on with their day immediately afterwards.

Afterwards, most practices advise avoiding significant sun exposure and heat for a short period, and shaving rather than waxing or plucking between sessions, because the laser needs the hair root present in order to work on it.
